Borrowed Wings by Regina Puckett, a baby dragon faces insecurities just like any other baby. His head is too big, his wings are too small, and he can't fly like the other little dragons. His momma notices his distress and then lets him borrow her wings for the day. What fun! Neither of them forgot that special day, even when baby dragon grew big, and his mother grew grey. While the text didn't rhyme, it was still enjoyable and age appropriate for a young child...perhaps in the 2-5 age range. Puckett employs several different tricks in writing for children, including repetition, and parent-child relations which will help kids learn. It was a sweet book with a cute moral and is sure to make kids feel appreciated and loved by their parents. My only complaint is that it was too short. I would have loved to see even more dragons and it would be cool to see if Puckett will make this into a series or not. In my book, it's never too early to get kids interested in fantasy and science fiction. Dragons are the best bridge, because it mixes magic with something that kids are already prone to be fond of: dinosaurs. Regina Puckett embraces this and, as both author and illustrator, does a fantastic job creating a cute and fun world for kids to find. The drawings looked like actual paint, which was cool, and clearly depicted a kid-style version of dragon land. I could see myself trying to draw these when I was a kid and having a total blast. In What The Heart Knows, we first meet Bill when he is persuaded to invite Emily to visit him. Of course this is an insane request because Bill hasn’t seen Emily in years and has been secretly in love with her for quite some time. Unfortunately for Bill, Emily has been through a huge ordeal at the hands of a colleague. She is withdrawn, suffers from night terrors and spends much of her time alone so that no one will know. Bill has been tasked by her family with uncovering this secret without revealing his own. But Regina Puckett couldn’t leave it at that, as we soon learn that Bill was the object of a young Emily’s affection. Throw in persistent threats by her attacker and you have a story primed to keep you guessing and wanting to shake some of the characters. Regina Puckett has executed this love story laced with tension and fear most brilliantly. I loved that everything that happens has layers to it. It makes What The Heart Knows a multi-faceted tale with depth in both the story as well as the characters. Bill and Emily have loved one another for a long time, but he’s pretending he has migraines and she’s pretending she’s perfectly fine and not being stalked by her would-be attacker. The emotional spectrum of this story goes from one end to the other, leaving you feeling afraid, frustrated, reluctant and even a bit ‘in the mood’. This is a love story filled with a ton of drama, but it never reaches soap opera proportions; it just leaves you feeling as though you’ve been through the wringer with Bill and Emily. Among the Living
Regina Puckett The day was offered but I wanted to turn it away I thought that just for once I couldn’t face another day But there it was staring me in the face with expectation A beautiful gift, a way to start over, a wonderful creation So I threw off the covers and did my best not to grumble For this offering I knew I should be grateful and humble Because one day that beautiful gift won’t be mine for the giving It will belong to those who are still here among the living Concealed in My Heart is a Readers' Favorite winner.
