Regina Puckett’s Once Upon a Modern Time is a collection of five short stories based on well-known fairy tales. First, the story of Phillip and Rose. I thought the story was sweet, and an innovative take on the fairy tale of Sleeping Beauty. The second story, The Magic Of Snow, speaks about the power of women, using real world, current situations that most readers will relate to. Hearts On Fire is the next short story. This story focuses on Jordan and sexy Santa/firefighter Samuel. I loved how Puckett was able to capture Samuel and Jordan’s chemistry. It was dynamic, as well as entertaining. I found myself smiling at their banter. Out of all the stories, this was my favorite.
The Beauty in the Beast is next. It chronicles Holly, a college student, and Dr. Knight, a college professor. Dr. Knight is a socially inept individual, and has earned the nickname of Dr. Evil from his students - he is the beast in this retelling of Beauty and the Beast. Finally, Falling for Cindy Fellars rounds out the book. This story follows the relationship of Cindy and Andrew. This is a new take on Cinderella, her shoe, and the evil stepmother. It was a unique twist on Cinderella and I enjoyed it. Of all Puckett’s stories, this was my second favorite.
Overall, I found Once Upon a Modern Time an enjoyable read. Puckett presents two important messages for women about strength, and the way we love one another, showing it isn’t the ‘packaging’ we come in, but the person inside. And sometimes the knight in shining armor is actually a woman. I would recommend Once Upon a Modern Time to women of any age who like sweet, short stories and fairy tale retellings.
